Over 41 years employed with the DWE, DNR, DIPNR, DSNR, DLWC, WRC & WCIC, in Armidale and Sydney, both in an office and field environment has provided an extensive knowledge of Northern NSW river systems, in all facets of Hydrography, from civil works, maintenance, stream gauging, water quality through to reporting and archiving the data from the stream gauging stations. Commenced employment in September 1967 and retired in January 2009

 Personal

                        Hobbies include meteorology, computers, cricket (as a spectator and statistician), Drag & V8 car racing, gardening, travel.

 

 

 

 

o          Hydrographic Experience  

  •    Over 41 years employed with the DWE, DNR, DIP&NR, DSNR, DLWC, DWR, WRC & WCIC, in Armidale and Sydney, both in an office and field environment.              

  •     Good knowledge of the river systems in  New South Wales and experience in maintaining and installing of gauging stations and associated equipment covering the Tweed, Brunswick, Richmond, Clarence, Bellinger, Macleay, Hastings, Manning, Karuah, Hunter, Shoalhaven, Clyde, Lachlan, Macintyre, Intersecting Streams, Gwydir, Namoi, Castlereagh, Macquarie, Barwon, Warrego, Paroo & Darling basins.

  •      Extensive experience in measuring stream flow in flood conditions, using most methods of establishing a height/flow correlation, including both small and large boats (powered and unpowered); cableway and traveller gaugings; bridge gaugings & chip float gaugings.


  •  Involvement in Catchment Blueprint Planning and Water Sharing Plans for the Macleay River catchment, proposed Blueprint for the Hastings Valley and subsequent analysing and reporting.


  • Experience in civil works and instrumentation installation for remote gauging sites in New South Wales. This has included Float Wells, Pressure Systems, Solid State Monitoring Systems, Controls/Weirs, Gamet Water Samplers, Mindata EC/Temperature Sensors, Greenspan, Campbell Scientific, Macquarie Bore Loggers, Hydrolab Water Quality sondes & BOM Elpro Alert Systems. Experience in the installation and maintenance of landline and cellular telephone equipment as well as UHF radio links used for transmitting stream height, water quality and rainfall parameters. Experience in low voltage, solar panel equipped power supplies used by the above systems.

  •  The collection of field data has been one of the major tasks when employed with the above mentioned agencies. Parameters collected include routine, flood, low flow and environmental river gaugings; Sediment sampling and gaugings; water level, rainfall, conductivity, temperature, turbidity, pH, effluent, water sampling (both manual and using auto sampling techniques).


  • Software application skills using HYDSTRA, which is the main program used throughout Australia in the Water Industry.

  • Experience in spreadsheets, databases and word processing programs, including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Smart Draw.

  • Creation and maintenance of Web Sites for local sporting organisations and weather, using Front Page 2003.

     


     

  • Wrote and presented a paper at the Hydrographers Conference at Darwin in 1990 on Blue-Green Algae.
